چکیده

For a directed graph G without loops or parallel edges, let β(G) denote the size of the smallest feedback arc set, i.e., the smallest subset X ⊂ E(G) such that G \X has no directed cycles. Let γ(G) be the number of unordered pairs of vertices of G which are not adjacent. We prove that every directed graph whose shortest directed cycle has length at least r ≥ 4 satisfies β(G) ≤ cγ(G)/r, where c is an absolute constant. This is tight up to the constant factor and extends a result of Chudnovsky, Seymour, and Sullivan. This result can be also used to answer a question of Yuster concerning almost given length cycles in digraphs. We show that for any fixed 0 < θ < 1/2 and sufficiently large n, if G is a digraph with n vertices and β(G) ≥ θn, then for any 0 ≤ m ≤ θn− o(n) it contains a directed cycle whose length is between m and m+ 6θ. Moreover, there is a constant C such that either G contains directed cycles of every length between C and θn− o(n) or it is close to a digraph G with a simple structure: every strong component of G is periodic. These results are also tight up to the constant factors.

Independent domination in directed graphs

In this paper we initialize the study of independent domination in directed graphs. We show that an independent dominating set of an orientation of a graph is also an independent dominating set of the underlying graph, but that the converse is not true in general. We then prove existence and uniqueness theorems for several classes of digraphs including orientations of complete graphs, paths, tr...

On independent domination numbers of grid and toroidal grid directed graphs

A subset $S$ of vertex set $V(D)$ is an {em indpendent dominating set} of $D$ if $S$ is both an independent and a dominating set of $D$. The {em indpendent domination number}, $i(D)$ is the cardinality of the smallest independent dominating set of $D$. In this paper we calculate the independent domination number of the { em cartesian product} of two {em directed paths} $P_m$ and $P_n$ for arbi...

Short Cycles Connectivity

Short cycles connectivity is a generalization of ordinary connectivity. Instead by a path (sequence of edges), two vertices have to be connected by a sequence of short cycles, in which two adjacent cycles have at least one common vertex. If all adjacent cycles in the sequence share at least one edge, we talk about edge short cycles connectivity. It is shown that the short cycles connectivity is...

Coloring edges and vertices of graphs without short or long cycles

Vertex and edge colorability are two graph problems that are NP-hard in general. We show that both problems remain difficult even for graphs without short cycles, i.e., without cycles of length at most g for any particular value of g. On the contrary, for graphs without long cycles, both problems can be solved in polynomial time.

Short cycle connectivity

Short cycle connectivity is a generalization of ordinary connectivity. Instead of by a path (sequence of edges), two vertices have to be connected by a sequence of short cycles, in which two consecutive cycles have at least one common vertex. If all consecutive cycles in the sequence share at least one edge, we talk about edge short cycle connectivity. Short cycle connectivity can be extended t...
